Gingivitis and Gum Disease – Reducing Your Risk Factors
If you have ever experienced inflamed gums, it is highly likely you are dealing with gingivitis. Whilst this is a common form of gum disease which is reversible, early intervention is necessary to avoid more serious complications such as periodontitis and potential tooth loss. In this blog post, Sydney Park Dental will be sharing some insight into gingivitis, as well as some helpful preventative measures you can take to maintain optimal oral health.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis refers to an inflammation of the gums, which is caused by the presence of bacteria (plaque) around the mouth and teeth. The gums play an important role within your mouth, serving to stabilise and seal the surrounding teeth. Gum inflammation should not be ignored, as it suggests that you may be experiencing a gum infection (gingivitis) caused by the build up of bacteria around your teeth and mouth. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease, and with early intervention it can be reversed.
Symptoms of Gingivitis
Gingivitis is not always painful, in many cases individuals may even be unaware of any issue. It is important to visit your dentist every 6-12 months for a routine check-up so that any potential issues can be observed and treated. Typical symptoms to keep an eye out for include:
- Tenderness around the gums
- Swollen or inflamed gums
- Gums bleeding whilst brushing/flossing teeth
- Receding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Sudden tooth sensitivity
It is important that gingivitis is treated early, as if left untreated it may develop into periodontitis which is a much more serious stage of gum disease.
Helpful Tips for Preventing Gingivitis
Plaque forms around your teeth and mouth after eating and drinking, making it very important that you brush and floss thoroughly at least twice a day. This will help to loosen plaque, especially that which becomes trapped between teeth. If left to harden, plaque may turn into tartar which will require professional removal.
In addition to maintaining good oral hygiene practices, you should also do the following to reduce your chances of experiencing gingivitis:
- Visit Your Dentist Regularly – Routine checkups are important, as they not only encompass a visual check of your oral health but also thorough cleaning, plaque/tartar removal and application of fluoride gel. If gingivitis is observed, your dentist may also recommend an appropriate toothpaste or mouthwash which can reduce the amount of harmful bacteria within your mouth.
- Watch What You Eat – Maintaining a healthy diet will not only benefit your physical and mental health, it will also go a long way in maintaining your oral health. It is best to avoid foods high in starch such as bread, lollies, pasta and biscuits. Instead opt for foods such as fresh fruits and carrots which can assist in plaque removal and contain high levels of minerals and vitamins.
- Avoid Tobacco – Tobacco use is a risk factor for oral cancer, and it can also cause small pockets to form around your teeth. Additionally, it can contribute to poor circulation which can negatively affect gum health.
