ERSKINVILLE ORTHODONTICS COVERING NEWTOWN, ALEXANDRIA & ST PETERS

SPD has been awarded Platinum certification from Invisalign for our extensive high quality work. This is quite special to us as it recognises the high standards set by our staff for excellence in patient care, education programs and orthodontics technology. The whole team here at SPD would like say “thankyou!”
If you are new to Invisalign technology, these retainers are custom-made clear aligners that are designed to gradually straighten your teeth without the need for fixed braces. There are multiple benefits to using them over traditional wire and clamp braces:
- They can be removed as required to eat, to sing…
- They are clear, so they are practically invisible.
- They do not contain metal or other bulky components that can cause discomfort or limit what you can eat.
- Since they are more discreet than traditional braces, they allow a more confident smile.
- They are much easier to keep clean
Try Our Orthodontics Treatments -Straighter teeth for a healthier smile
Do you wish your teeth were straighter? Crooked teeth or a misaligned bite can affect more than just your appearance. They can also affect how you eat or speak and increase your risk of developing other dental problems. Protruding teeth may also be at greater risk of injury.
If your teeth don’t line up properly when you smile, they stick out or have gaps, you could benefit from orthodontics. Although some people only associate braces with teenagers, many adults now choose to have braces thanks to advances in technology making these appliances more comfortable and less visible in the mouth compared to those of the past.
If you’re thinking about orthodontics in Erskineville, Sydney Park Dental is now offering a free consultation as part of your regular check-up and clean appointment. We’ll examine your mouth and jaws and let you know if you or your child could benefit from orthodontic treatment. We’ll explain exactly what this involves and what the risks may be so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you or your family.

What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that concerns the position and alignment of teeth. These treatments can be designed to correct an existing issue with your teeth or jaws or to prevent problems from developing in the future. Orthodontics can be complex, and dentists need to complete extra training before they can offer these treatments.
An orthodontic consultation is carried out separately from your oral health assessment. It may involve the use of x-rays or other imaging systems to give your dentist a more complete picture of your mouth so they can plan the most effective treatment.
Who can benefit from orthodontics?
We may spot signs of orthodontic problems during your regular check-up. You might also have an issue that’s affecting your health or wellbeing that you want corrected. Depending on the individual case, orthodontics may be able to correct:
- Bite problems (malocclusion) such as overbite, underbite or crossbite
- Crowded teeth
- Protruding teeth
- Gaps or uneven spacing between teeth
What age can orthodontics begin?
There’s no set age when children or teenagers can begin orthodontic treatment, as it depends on how the teeth and jaws have developed. However, we recommend that children have their first orthodontic assessment before the age of 8. This gives our dentists the chance to address issues with alignment, asymmetry or bad habits such as thumb sucking when these are usually easier to correct.
Braces and other orthodontic treatments can usually begin around the age of 11–12. Many older teenagers and adults are also suitable for orthodontics.
What does orthodontics involve?
If you book an orthodontics consultation at Sydney Park Dental, we’ll first give you a comprehensive oral health assessment to check that your teeth and gums are healthy or recommend any treatments that may be needed. We’ll then examine the position and alignment of your teeth in relation to your jaws, using dental x-rays to help us make a diagnosis.
If we think you could benefit from orthodontics, we’ll discuss the treatment options we offer at our Erskineville clinic and explain what each one involves. We’ll make sure you have realistic expectations of what your results could be and how long the treatment is likely to take.
For traditional braces, brackets and bands are attached to the teeth that apply gentle force to slowly move them into their desired position over time. We’ll see you every few weeks during the course of the treatment to make any adjustments needed and check that your treatment is going according to plan.
The time it takes to straighten your teeth depends on your unique situation and the type of treatment you choose, but it will usually take more than a year. You’ll also need to wear a retainer temporarily after the treatment to help maintain the new position of your teeth and jaws and prevent them from shifting back.
What are the risks?
We’ll make sure you understand any possible risk of complications or side-effects during your consultation. It may take a few weeks to get used to the feel of your new braces, and they may affect how you eat and speak at first, but your mouth should quickly adjust.
If your braces feel painful or come loose, you should contact us as soon as possible to make an emergency appointment.
