Orthodontics And Invisalign Dental Treatments

If your teeth are crooked or misshapen, perhaps you might consider a set of aligners as a viable treatment option. Invisalign is a relatively new orthodontic aligner treatment. It helps straighten teeth without needing typical metal braces which are invasive and sometimes painful.

Standard braces are often ugly and can cut the lips and gums, causing bleeding and discomfort to patients. Invisalign align systems, on the other hand, are a removable orthodontic treatment. They are more comfortable and offer less of a safety hazard than standard metal braces.

Invisalign treatment involves wearing a set of custom-fitted plastic aligners that are virtually invisible. They help shift your teeth into the proper position.

Invisalign does offer benefits compared to traditional metal braces. For example, the retainers are removable, meaning they do not get in the way during meal time and when brushing teeth.

We highly recommend Invisalign patients take due diligence to wear their retainer at all other times (20 hours a day), however. This is because the less time the braces are worn, the longer teeth will take to resume an aesthetically pleasing position. Furthermore, if the retainer is lost, it can be expensive to replace.

Invisalign treatments often incorporate several retainers over the course of treatment. When treatment commences, the dentist will take a three dimensional digital scan of your teeth. They will then calculate precisely where pressure needs to be applied to correct a crooked smile. The Invisalign clear aligners will be moulded according to this calculation.

Further measurements and calculations will be taken throughout the course of treatment as teeth begin to adjust.

When your teeth are properly aligned again, you can simply remove the aligners and the Invisalign can simply be thrown away. There is no follow up appointment with an orthodontist required, which is the case with standard metal braces. These cannot be removed by the patient.

For many people, the choice between braces and Invisalign often comes down to the investment required. The efficacy of a removable plastic aligner also comes into question when this decision is being considered.

The cost of Invisalign system typically is a little bit higher than regular braces. The average cost, according to the manufacturer, ranges from $3,500 and $8,000. The difference lies in the length of time the braces need to be worn. Longer treatments will cost more than brief treatments.

Of course, the treatment time will depend on the alignment of your teeth. Especially crooked teeth may need treatment for up to four years. Minor misalignment may only require 12 months of Invisalign treatment.
